Gas safety

Smell gas? Leave first. Do not wait for a plumber quote.

A suspected natural-gas leak calls for evacuation and utility or emergency help.

The short answer

Leave the area immediately. From a safe location, call SoCalGas at 1-800-427-2200. Call 911 for immediate danger or if you cannot reach the utility.

Avoid ignition sources

Do not use flames, electrical switches, appliances or devices that could spark in the affected area. Do not try to repair the leak or locate its source. Follow SoCalGas and emergency responders’ directions.

This is an emergency reference

Use the official SoCalGas safety page for its current instructions. Do not submit a community question, wait for a review response or compare directory listings while a leak is suspected. Our site does not dispatch emergency assistance.

After the area is made safe

Ask the utility or responders what follow-up is required before any equipment is used again. Later repair arrangements should follow that direction. This article is general safety information, not a report about an incident in your neighborhood.
