Kitchen & disposal

The disposal runs, but the sink will not drain. Same problem?

A running motor does not prove the drain line is clear. Describe both symptoms.

Source checked · Oct 15, 2026 · 3 min read
The short answer

Do not put your hand into a disposal. Identify the model and use its manufacturer’s instructions or request service.

Describe what happened

Did water stop draining before or after the disposal issue? Is there a hum, normal running sound or no sound? Is one bowl affected or both? Record the sequence without repeatedly testing a unit that is not working properly. This is an illustrative checklist, not a customer case.

What the manufacturer distinguishes

InSinkErator separates drain-line clogs, jams and units that will not start. Its guidance says to disconnect power before cleaning and never place a hand inside. Troubleshooting instructions vary by unit and symptom; follow the correct manual.

Make the service request useful

Provide the brand and model, any leak location and products already poured into the sink. Ask whether the visit covers the disposal, the drain line or both, and how replacement would be authorized. Do not approve a new disposal solely because water is draining slowly.
